How much does an HVAC Technician make in 2026? Taxes & Wages

In 2026, the average salary for HVAC technicians in the U.S. is around $58,900 per year, though it can vary depending on experience, certifications, and climate region.

Entry-level techs might earn closer to $44,700, while experienced pros with commercial refrigeration or maintenance contracts could see salaries as high as $82,600 or more, especially in hot-climate markets like Phoenix, Houston, and Miami.

When it comes to taxes, HVAC contractors — like all self-employed service pros — are responsible for paying both income taxes and self-employment taxes (which cover Social Security and Medicare).

The self-employment tax rate is 15.3%, which consists of 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare.

For income up to $172,000 in 2026, you'll pay the full 15.3%. Income above this threshold is only subject to the 2.9% Medicare portion, with an additional 0.9% for high earners (income above $200,000 for single filers).
